choices
Yesterday I was talking with a friend about choices in life and I remembered a short story I read once. As far as I can remember it, it goes like this.
An old lady receives a television set for free. She can try it for 1 day and decide to keep it or not.
When she turns it on, the television shows the birth of a child, a little lovely girl. As the camera changes subject, the old lady recognises her parents. They are just more younger than she can remember.
Soon she realises that the show is about her life. She is so happy!
Her childhood, as she could never live it! She can now see things that she lived but could not remember.
The story goes on capturing only the most important moments of her life. Suddently, the image freezes and a phrase appears: "Do you want kiss this boy?"
She can remember that lovely morning. She was about 7 and a school a boy asked her a kiss.
She decided not to kiss him. Now, she can make that choice again. She presses "yes" on the remote control and watch what her life could have been.
Soon she realises that the television is magic. She can re-live of the most important choices in her life and see the consequences.
She spends all night trying all difference combinations. In one, she ends up rich and famous, in another widowed with 3 children to raise.
In the morning, the television seller rings her door. The door is open. He steps in and find the old lady crying in front of the tv set. "do you want to keep it?", he asks.
"No", she replies. "Nobody does", he mutters wrapping the television set.
It does not matter what you decide. What it matters is that you don't look up in anger or sorrow.
When I look back at the choises I made, I always think that they were the right ones and I have the best life I can have. Maybe because it is the only one I can have.
